The Middle Ages were very opulent times in Egypt. Hospitals treated needy patients free of charge, and refused to release them until they could eat an entire roasted chicken. This is a large quantity even for modern standards let alone during the Middle Ages. In comparison, during the late 16th century, King Henry IV of France told the citizens of his country that his goal was to enable each French family to afford a single chicken for their Sunday supper. To make a quick one dish dinner, add chopped potatoes, zucchini, tomatoes, and carrots to the pan halfway through cooking.
